ABOUT ME

EMEKA THE DIRECTOR

Portriat.jpg

Emeka Awa is a comic illustrator and an animation filmmaker currently operating in Central New Jersey, and was born in Newark during 1996. As a first-generation American raised by his two immigrant parents that originated from Jamaica and Nigeria he was brought up with grand expectations for his future. Due to his large size compared to the other children around his age, his father wanted Emeka to focus on future a basketball career. Whereas, Emeka's mother urged him to focus towards educational pursuits that could lead to a lucrative career such as a doctor or lawyer. However, Emeka didn't care about any of those choices or much about his future for that matter.

The only thing he cared about was binge watching 2000s cartoons and creating his own characters. In fact, once an adolescent Emeka watched the animated Nickelodeon film titled, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001) in theaters for the first time he was inspired to take his mother's camcorder and film his own movie. The home-video style film was titled, Emeka's First Movie (1999-2001?), and it was titled as a homage to his favorite VHS animated film similarly titled, Doug's First Movie (1999). Emeka's First Movie was an experimental amateurish introduction into film-making for the young child-director with an incoherent narrative that consisted of the boy yelling phrases such as, "Cut!" and "Action!" to his toys and stuffed animals as if they were his employed actors following his script. Unfortunately, that monstrosity of a home-video was lost in time, but Emeka's film-making aspirations had followed him right into high-school and throughout his college career.

He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) in 2018. For four-consecutive years at SAIC Emeka trained in the disciplines comic illustration and 2D animation. These skills of his accumulated into his first creditable animated short film titled, Skippy Kills Ku Kluxers (2018) that was presented during the SAIC FVMAS Siskel Film Festival presented at the Gene Siskel Theater Film Center located in Chicago, IL. That film's narrative was about an anthropomorphic chubby bear luck-warrior named, Skippy, from a Dystopian New Jersey where the KKK reigns supreme.  Skippy challenges the leader of the KKK to a duel to the death. The film acted as teaser for the world and plot Emeka's setting up for his currently in-production comic series tilted, Skippy.

Skippy Kills Ku Kluxers was also presented in his birth-city at the Newark International Film Festival at the Cityplex 12 Theater in Newark, NJ.

The purpose of this website is to serve as a platform for Emeka Awa's ongoing art career, and to hopefully serve as a time capsule that ensures that none of Mr. Awa's creative works are lost in time like Emeka's First Movie unfortunately was. Emeka's journey toward his future hasn't always been clear to him, but his end goal hasn't faltered. Like Masashi Khisimoto's hyperactive knuckleheaded ninja-protagonist, Naruto, that dreamed of becoming "The Hokage" also known as the most respected ninja of his generation. Emeka may not be a ninja, lawyer, doctor, or even a basketball player, but he will damn sure become respected as "The Director" of his generation, believe it.
